IIJ Global to Offer Component as a Solution (CaaS) for Providing a one-stop IoT Solutions
Providing Industry-Specific Components In a One-Stop-Shop Service to Meet a Wide Range of IoT Utilization Needs

TOKYO—December 7, 2016—Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774)’s 100% owned subsidiary IIJ Global Solutions Inc. (IIJ Global)—provider of WAN services for corporate clients—today announced it will begin offering its Component as a Solution (CaaS) business model to provide Internet of Things (IoT) solutions that respond to industry-specific applications by componentizing the fundamental technologies required for IoT systems.

The IoT—where all manner of things are connected on networks, making data collected from devices analyzable and visible—is expected to have applications in a wide range of domains. However, constructing IoT systems requires implementing various technologies and diverse IT resources, including devices, networks, and infrastructure for analyzing aggregated data. As a result, an issue with implementing an IoT for many companies is that they must procure separately the various types of software, networks, gateway devices, cloud environments, and other components they need for implementation.

In order to provide a solution, IIJ Global has developed a CaaS model that provides industry-specific solutions in a one-stop-shop service by componentizing the key technologies and IT resources required for building an IoT system. Through the use of CaaS, IIJ Global's customers will be able to quickly and cost-effectively build an IoT environment by combining the components they need for their industry or application.

CaaS offers the following major components:

1.Industry-specific platforms

As a first step, IIJ Global offers the following platforms for the manufacturing industry:

  • Data collection and visualization systems equipped with various sensor arrays: Gather data from sensors, and store and view it in the cloud.
  • Multi-PLC management systems: Centrally manage various PLCs (*1)—used as controllers in manufacturing workplaces—as shared devices in the cloud, making data accessible without regard for the type of machine from which it originated.
  1. PLC: An abbreviation for Programmable Logic Controller. An industrial computer control system that is programmable to user environments and specifications.

IIJ Global plans to offer the following platforms:

  • Digital signage systems
  • IP camera monitoring systems
  • Integrated energy and equipment management systems

2.Gateway devices

  • Upload data from sensors—such as those for monitoring device uptime—to the cloud. With a variety of available interfaces, these gateways are compatible with many devices.

  • Connect gateway devices to the cloud using a private network that utilizes IIJ Mobile Service to provide a customer-dedicated private backbone service. Networks can be built on secure, IoT-dedicated wireless platforms that do not route through the Internet.

Each component can support a wide range of protocols and interfaces, regardless of industry and application—such as surveillance cameras in elevators or taxis—with the use of IIJ's network services and IIJ IoT Service, along with products and software from partner companies combined with IIJ Global's know-how in the construction and operation of inter-location networks.

IIJ Global has positioned CaaS as one of its growth businesses, and by targeting markets such as automated controllers for manufacturing equipment in factories and for energy management facilities in buildings, it aims to provide CaaS to 20 companies in the first year, expanding to 200 companies in the second.
